Mountain roads and railways create a particular engineering headache: long stretches of cut-and-fill construction through terrain that is often steep, geologically unstable, and difficult to reach with heavy machinery. Gabions have become a standard response to exactly this kind of challenge, valued less for any single dramatic property than for a practical combination of qualities that suit remote, difficult terrain especially well.
Retaining walls built from gabions along highway and rail cuttings can typically be constructed using stone found near the site, by crews without highly specialized equipment, which matters considerably in locations where trucking in large volumes of ready-mixed concrete is slow or expensive. Their tolerance for uneven settlement is equally valuable in this context, since mountainous fill slopes often continue consolidating for months or years after construction, a process that would crack a rigid concrete wall but that a flexible gabion assembly can generally absorb without structural distress. Their free-draining nature helps too, since water management along steep cut slopes, particularly during heavy rainfall, is often the single most important factor in whether a slope stays stable.
A related but distinct application addresses rockfall rather than earth retention. Rather than forming a solid wall, wire mesh — sometimes gabion-style panels, sometimes simple woven drapery — is anchored at the top of an unstable rock slope and left looser at the bottom, forming a kind of net that catches dislodged rock and debris before it can bounce onto the roadway below. Maintenance crews periodically clear accumulated material from the base of the drapery, a far cheaper and less disruptive long-term strategy in many cases than continually scaling loose rock off the slope by hand. Guidance from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration situates this kind of mesh barrier as one option among several in a broader rockfall-mitigation toolkit, alongside slope scaling, rock bolts and anchors, and catchment ditches at the base of a slope — the appropriate choice depending on site-specific factors including the expected energy and likely trajectory of falling rock, matters engineers assess before committing to any single method.
Gabions also do quieter, less visible work along transportation corridors: armoring the ground around culvert inlets and outlets against the concentrated, erosive flow that collects at those points, protecting bridge abutments from the scouring action of a river during flood, and occasionally forming noise-attenuating barriers along roadside embankments. None of these applications is glamorous, but collectively they explain why a material first refined to repair an Italian river weir now shows up, in one form or another, along mountain highways on nearly every continent.
